On 3 May 2019, a queue stretched for several blocks toward the Chapel of the Bellavista Cross during the Alasitas fair in Puno, southern Peru. People carried tiny houses, cars, buses, diplomas and banknotes—miniatures of things they hoped to obtain in full scale. Diario Correo reported that thousands arrived from early morning. At noon a priest celebrated Mass and blessed the purchases, while Andean forms of blessing were also part of the festival landscape. The line did not lead to the desired house or degree itself, but to a ritual treatment of its miniature. Waiting turned a private ambition into an object publicly carried, displayed and blessed. The striking feature of the queue was its scale: several city blocks of people holding pocket-sized versions of possible futures.
