On 19 May 1983, cars queued to drive aboard a ferry at St Helier Harbour in Jersey. The Jersey Heritage catalogue identifies the vehicle line, date, harbour and photographer.
When cars board a ship, order is shaped not only by passengers but by vehicle size and finite deck space. A line on the road is folded one vehicle at a time into the vessel. For an island, sea routes connect everyday travel with the wider world. The queue marked the boundary where road transport waited to become a voyage.
