On inter-island ferries in the Faroe Islands, travellers without reservations are directed to 'queue 2' at the dock. Guidance from the public transport company Strandfaraskip Landsins says booked vehicles and passengers board first; only if space remains does the second queue board until the vessel is full. There is no waiting list for a full sailing. After the booking deadline, a traveller may buy a standby ticket and wait at the terminal instead. Even reserved vehicles must be in line at least fifteen minutes before departure or their place may be given to an unbooked vehicle. Capacity is limited on some routes, making advance booking essential. The distinctive feature is that boarding order is divided into two layers rather than governed by arrival time alone. Queue two is a mechanism for allocating whatever fragment of ferry capacity may remain after promises to booked travellers have been honoured.
