On 2 January 2023, when public viewing of former pope Benedict XVI began in St Peter's Basilica, people started queuing before dawn. Reuters reported tens of thousands entering the basilica, and the Vatican counted about 65,000 passing the body on the first day.
What distinguishes this queue is that it was for a pope who had resigned—the first to do so in roughly six centuries—rather than one who died in office. The rites were simpler, but individual farewell was preserved by moving people past the body one by one.
