On 17 August 1993, during the siege of Sarajevo, residents queued for water. With normal supply cut, people had to carry containers to shared sources while streets remained exposed to sniper fire. Photographic records preserve the sight of civilians waiting for and transporting water while attempting to reduce their exposure.

Order offered no guarantee of safety in this queue. Remaining near the source increased the danger, but a rush would make distribution impossible. The need to take water one person at a time collided with the need to return behind cover as quickly as possible.
