South Africa's Nazareth Baptist Church, commonly called the Shembe church, makes an annual January pilgrimage to Mount Nhlangakazi. A 2001 eyewitness report describes worshippers performing a cleansing rite before climbing, with thousands gathered at the summit. After the service, participants, including the reporter, queued to make their offertory.
This was not an entrance or ration line but an ordered act of giving. An announcement warned against two men soliciting unauthorized donations, showing that the queue also helped define where legitimate offerings belonged within a vast religious gathering.
