In June 2021, a Zamzam-water distribution robot demonstrated at the Grand Mosque in Mecca reversed the usual direction of service. Arab News reported that pilgrims and staff would no longer need to queue for a drink; instead, they could take a bottle as the robot passed. Rather than drawing people to a fixed water point, the distribution point moved among them.

Zamzam water comes from the sacred well in Mecca and carries deep religious meaning for pilgrims. During the COVID-19 pandemic, concentrating people at one point and sharing containers created an additional public-health problem. The robot was introduced to hand out bottles without contact and reduce both crowding and opportunities for transmission.

The report does not establish the former queue’s length or each pilgrim’s waiting time. Its explicit statement that people would no longer have to queue nevertheless confirms that obtaining water had involved ordered waiting. The devotion attached to the water remained unchanged; what changed was the choreography of receiving it.
