On 13 March 1978, a Jersey Evening Post photographer recorded a long line of traffic around New North Quay at St Helier Harbour. The Jersey Heritage catalogue identifies the purpose explicitly: the vehicles were waiting to board the car ferry. The group of photographs is preserved under reference L/A/75/A3/3/6540.
At an island harbour, a ferry becomes an extension of the road. But departures are timed and vehicle capacity is finite, so ordinary traffic is reorganized into a single sequence at the quay. The catalogue does not explain what caused the length of the line or how long drivers waited. It does, however, document the essential act clearly: people taking their cars across the sea had to wait for their turn at the loading point.
