In October 2017, as public viewing of the late King Bhumibol’s royal urn approached its end, a long last-chance line formed in Bangkok. Local reports documented a queue of about two kilometres reaching toward Democracy Monument and tens of thousands of mourners heading to the Grand Palace’s throne hall on the final day.

What distinguishes this queue is that it was created not by a sale or administrative procedure but by a one-time closing deadline. National mourning was recorded not only as a vast crowd but as the long time required for individuals to move in order toward the palace.
