During the Catholic Jubilee of 2025, pilgrims queued to pass through the Holy Door of St Peter's Basilica. The official system offered a pilgrim card and a reserved passage time. Groups received a Jubilee cross in St Peter's Square and followed a designated pilgrimage route, while security screening remained necessary before access.
Passing through the door was a central act of the Holy Year, a once-every-quarter-century pilgrimage associated with receiving an indulgence. Pilgrims were recorded lining up on 25 December 2024, the day after the door opened. By the Jubilee's end, the Vatican said more than 33 million people had participated.
A reservation did not abolish waiting. It organised an enormous flow into devotional order: a time slot on a phone, a meeting point in the square, a walk behind a cross and a security checkpoint formed the modern queue leading to an old ritual.
