On 6 January 1975, applicants stood in a line at the admissions counters of Seoul National University. A Seoul Shinmun retrospective accompanying the archival photograph explains that students first took a national preliminary examination, then submitted applications to individual universities in January before sitting university-specific tests. Before online applications, the paperwork had to be carried to the campus counter.
Behind the line was a tactical contest known for watching application ratios. Family members spread across several universities and exchanged information about departments with fewer applicants. Near deadlines, counters became so crowded that some late arrivals failed to submit at all. The waiting area was not merely a document desk; it was the place where changing numbers could alter a student's final choice.
The inherited candidate specified the 1980s, but the photograph that directly confirms an ordered physical line dates to 1975, so the period has been corrected. The waiting target remains submission of a university application in Seoul. Document order and competitive admissions strategy converged at the same counter.
