On Sri Lankan tea estates, pluckers carry harvested green leaf to a weighing point and wait their turn for the load to be recorded. A work study separated the process into walking, queuing and weighing, reporting queue times of 11 to 35 minutes at the observed stations.
The weight of the leaf is tied directly to the day's work. The queue is the threshold that connects leaves picked in the field with wages and factory production.
