In August 2015, Syrians, Afghans, Iraqis and others entering North Macedonia from Greece waited at Gevgelija for onward movement toward Serbia. Reuters video reporting recorded thousands queuing anxiously for passage north by train and through the transit point.

What distinguishes this queue is that it was not merely a wait at a ticket office. People concentrated at a narrow connection on a route across Europe, where border access and train capacity determined the order in which a much longer journey could continue.
