In 2021, large queues formed at COVID-19 vaccination centres in Ghana. A WHO Africa account records an immunisation officer speaking with people in line and finding that many had lost relatives; the disease had become immediate, and demand for vaccination had risen.
Ghana received vaccines through COVAX in late February and had vaccinated more than 470,000 people in priority areas twenty days later. The line was not only a sign of constrained supply. It marked a shift from hesitation toward action as illness became personal. A programme designed to persuade people to come forward suddenly had to organise those who already had.
