Buying an airline ticket in Turkmenistan long meant going to a sales office and waiting one’s turn. When online sales through the state-services portal were introduced in 2023, local reporting described the benefit in unusually concrete terms: customers would no longer have to stand in line at the ticket office. The sales network covered Ashgabat and ticket offices in several other Turkmen cities, so the change was not presented as an abstract exercise in digitisation. It was a replacement for a physical, ordered wait at a counter. Turkmenistan Airlines now states that international tickets can be purchased both online and through its ticket offices. The sources do not prove that every ticket-office queue disappeared, and this article does not make that claim. What they do document is the public-facing logic of the reform: reduce the need to travel to a sales point and wait there for service. The case captures a familiar queue at the threshold of travel as it moves from a city ticket office to a personal screen, while the staffed counter remains available for those who still need it.
