On 25 October 2020, Chile held a referendum on whether to begin drafting a new constitution. Long queues, including many younger voters, formed at polling places, with people spaced apart under COVID-19 precautions. Live local reporting noted that although lines appeared extensive at numerous sites, reports from several cities said the act of voting itself could take about ten minutes.
The distinctive feature of these queues was that participation and infection-control rules determined their visible length at the same time. The referendum had originally been scheduled for April but was postponed to October because of the pandemic. A constitutional choice that grew out of the 2019 social movement was carried out through a new physical order outside polling stations: voters waiting at a distance from one another.
