When the Venezuela–Colombia border formally reopened in August 2016, people crossed to buy food and other essentials. Reuters recorded travellers arriving from across Venezuela and queuing overnight for the chance to cross and purchase goods in short supply at home.

What distinguishes this queue is that a national border, rather than a shop door, became the entrance to buying food. To obtain rice, oil and other basics missing from domestic shelves, the order of shopping was replaced by the order of immigration control and crossing a bridge.
