In post-independence Maputo, Mozambique, people formed a physical line to wait for bread. A photograph preserved in a southern African historical publication is explicitly captioned “Bread queue in Maputo” and appears in the context of the shortages and declining export income that put pressure on urban life from the late 1970s onward.\n\nThe caption does not establish each person’s waiting time or every detail of the distribution system. It does directly establish the place, the object of the wait and a physical queue. This was not simply a crowd: it was an everyday order through which people moved, one after another, toward a limited staple food.
