Before sunset during Ramadan, queues form outside bakeries across Türkiye for freshly baked Ramadan pide. A March 2025 Anadolu Agency report carried by Daily Sabah described people of all ages waiting at an Istanbul bakery; one customer said that the waiting itself was part of Ramadan. Pide is a seasonal flatbread, often topped with sesame, that buyers hope to bring home warm for iftar.
The object at the front of the line is one loaf, but the wait also carries neighborhood greetings and childhood memories. People leave different homes and meet outside the same oven, all moving toward the shared hour when the fast ends.
