A propaganda leaflet dated 9 April 1943 depicts a long queue outside a city-run pawnshop in Japan. The Australian War Memorial catalogue explains that the leaflet was designed to highlight the financial effects of war on ordinary Japanese citizens. Its two drawings show a man with an empty cash box deciding to visit a pawnshop and the line outside it.
This is a wartime propaganda image, not a documentary photograph of a specific street, and that limitation matters. The maker, date, purpose and represented queue are nevertheless clear as primary-source evidence. People are shown waiting not to buy goods, but to turn possessions into cash. The direction of exchange has reversed from consumption to household survival.
