At the Venkateswara temple in Tirumala, southern India, receiving the celebrated laddu sweet is part of the pilgrimage. On 13 July 2015, temple administrator Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams began issuing laddu tokens inside the compartments of Vaikuntham Queue Complex II, where pilgrims were already waiting for their turn for darshan. The stated purpose was to spare them another long wait to obtain laddus after worship.

The change did not make the first queue move faster. It placed preparation for the next transaction inside time that pilgrims were already spending in an ordered wait. One period of waiting now served two processes: progression towards darshan and advance entitlement to the sweet. TTD later described online token options that likewise allowed devotees to buy laddus without joining another queue.

When two lines occur in sequence, the answer is not always more counters. Giving people the right needed for the second service while they are still in the first line can remove the later bottleneck. A small laddu token reorganised the timetable of a pilgrim’s day.
