In April 2023, customers formed a line outside a confectionery in central Cairo to collect kahk for Eid. Al-Dostor's market report says that each person held a receipt and waited for a box that had already been reserved. One customer explained that he returned to the same shop every year because he trusted the quality of its ghee and other ingredients. Some families still bake together at home, but others increasingly choose ready-made cakes because commercial preparation is faster. In this queue, selection was not the main delay. The order came from checking receipts and handing over goods that had already been promised. A reservation could secure the cakes without eliminating the wait to receive them. The line joined an Eid tradition, a shift from household baking to shop production, and a documentary system of receipts on the same pavement.
