At a popular halwa shop in Manama's old souq, customers queue to buy Bahrain's traditional sweet. A researcher who visited the shop twice recorded lines that included local residents as well as visitors from Oman and Al-Hasa in eastern Saudi Arabia.

The translucent confection, cooked in large pans, combines sugar, starch, spices and nuts. The order at the counter is more than a purchase line: it is a small scene of Gulf food culture drawing people across the sea and national borders. Because the evidence does not establish a Ramadan night market, this article presents the observed everyday shop queue instead.
